Brittle nails, hair loss, and dehydrated skin – it happens to all of us. And sometimes, no matter how many creams or shampoos you use, it never seems to help. That’s because most of the time, what’s happening on the outside is really a reflection of what’s going on on the inside. Eating healthily and steering away from junk food is great, but it doesn’t always give your body exactly what it needs to be in top shape. If you’re fretting over any of these common beauty concerns, here’s how to recognize the signs that you need to do a little more, and what that ‘more’ is. Don’t forget to look after your body, take your vitamins and make time for yourself. Although, if you do have serious concerns, remember to consult with a doctor!

Dehydrated Skin

Okay, we just HAVE to talk about this. Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things. Dry skin is usually the appearance of roughness or flakes on the skin and can be managed at the surface of the skin with topical creams – it’s typically a hereditary skin type. Dry skin occurs when the skin has a lack of oil on its surface, whereas dehydrated skin occurs when it has a lack of water. Hydrated skin appears more plump and healthy, while dehydrated skin will increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As we know, oil and water are two very different things, so trying to soothe dehydrated skin with oily creams is pretty much a lost cause.

A good way to tell if you’re dehydrated is by gently pinching the skin on the back of your hand, if it goes back into place instantly, you’re good, but if it takes a while, you’re dehydrated – you just did it didn’t you? The best way to hydrate your skin is by drinking a lot of water, but, you can get it from your food too. Strawberries, watermelon, lettuce, squash, and cucumber contain between 90-99% water, so these foods are ideal if you want to up your intake. Drinking caffeine and alcohol can also cause dehydration, so try not to consume either in excess (or if you still want that glass..*bottle, cough* then just make sure you are drinking water in between.)

Brittle Nails

Brittle, soft, thin nails that are prone to splitting and tearing are not only super annoying but it’s also known as ‘onychoschizia.’ A new study found that this condition affects 20% of the population – so that’s a pretty huge number. This condition can be caused by a number of external factors including harsh nail polish removers, water damage, and excessive use of soaps, there are some internal factors too. One common internal reason for nail splitting is a lack of iron. Increasing the iron in your diet is super important because iron is needed in the body to make hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that transports oxygen and carbon dioxide through your body. It sounds really sciencey, but don’t worry, it’s a pretty simple fix – eat them greens! Leafy greens are packed full of iron so adding more to your diet is an easy way to counteract an iron deficiency. Other great foods to eat are beans and cashews, and, for our vegans, tofu is great too! Of course, there’re always supplements, but getting your vitamins from foods is definitely the most effective option.

Hair Loss

Experiencing hair loss can feel embarrassing, frustrating and even quite terrifying, so not many of us like to talk about it. But it’s okay to talk ladies, we’re all here, and experiencing hair loss at some point in your life is not uncommon! There are hundreds of topical treatments out there for hair loss but sometimes it can be hereditary. If you’re experiencing hair loss and there’s no link to the condition in your family, there are other things that could be the ‘root’ cause.

As well as medication side effects, stress or styling damage, if your hormones are off balance, this can also affect your hair. Many women experience hair loss after pregnancy due to the extreme hormones your body creates during this period. This causes your hormones to go out of sync and can cause a whole lot of issues! Unfortunately, in most cases, you just have to ride it out until your hormones balance themselves out, but doctors can also help with hormone replacement therapy and medication if necessary. If you’re concerned that you’re losing more hair than normal (100 hairs lost a day is normal!), then the best thing to do is to consult with a doctor.

Sallow Skin

The term ‘sallow skin’ is used quite a lot in the beauty industry but not many of us know what it really means. Sallow skin basically refers to skin that has lost its natural tone. It can refer to a dull complexion, discoloration, pigmentation or just anything that makes your skin look like it’s lost its glow.

Sallow skin affects a lot of people in many different ways, so it’s natural that there could be a number of different remedies. The most common issue, however, is vitamin deficiencies. Vitamins A, B-12, C, E, and K could all be impacting the way your skin looks, but it’s easy to get it back on track and looking gorgeous. Vitamin A is found in orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, squash, and capsicum. Vitamin B-12 is found in meats, while vitamin C is probably the most well known, as it is found in citrus fruits. Vitamin E is found in nuts, while vitamin K is found in berries and those leafy greens! To sum up, make sure you’re having a healthy and well-balanced diet and taking those multivitamins!


Literally one of the worst problems one could face is that of the dreaded spot! Many of us suffer with acne and its sods law that they usually pop out (so to speak!) at some of the most inconvenient times! Understanding acne (or misunderstanding it) is a common thing. Acne is a skin problem that affects almost all teenagers and adults at some point in time. The action of hormones on the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) causes the condition. The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that empties onto the skin surface through the hair follicle opening (pore). The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the follicle openings. When this happens, pores become clogged and pimples develop. So, you may be wondering how you can prevent these outbreaks. Well, first things first - don’t over wash or use harsh scrubs. Remember, acne is not caused by dirt. Two gentle washings a day is sufficient. Too much cleansing can leave skin irritated and dry, triggering increased oil production and increasing the likelihood of pimples.Use oil-free, non-comedogenic products (these won’t clog pores). Don’t squeeze or pick blemishes. Popping pimples can drive acne bacteria deeper into the skin. Picking can lead to more inflammation and permanent scarring. Dont forget to moisturise - one of the most common questions I get as a skin therapist is "Wont Moisturising cause more breakouts?!" Believe it or not, but actually skipping on moisturising can cause breakouts as your skin will over compensate for lack of moisture and create more oil leading to a breakout! Last but not least - ladies - always, ALWAYS wash your makeup brushes after each application!!
