10 Super foods that will give you the glow!

They say beauty starts from within and I couldn't agree more. It's no secret that dermatologists everywhere say that the easiest way to get glowing, radiant skin is to start with your diet, so with that in mind, here are my top 10 super foods that you should incorporate into your diet that will not only make you feel great, they will seriously up your skin game!

1. Avocado

Avocados are famously great for skin; high in poly- and monounsaturated fatty acids (like omega 9’s), they keep skin looking firm and dewy, help regenerate damaged skin cells, and reduce redness and irritation. The omega 9’s, in particular, keep your epidural layer (the top layer of skin) moisturized, which gives you noticeably hydrated and healthy-looking skin. Avocados are also full of antioxidant carotenoids that not only fight free radicals, which are one of the major culprits of damaged skin and aging, but also help your skin maintain water content and elasticity.

2. Bone Broth

Forget botox, drink bone broth! There's a reason why the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Kourtney Kardashian swear by this - not only does it taste great, and an amazing weight loss aid, its packed full of collagen which is great for skin elasticity. As well as this being a great anti aging tool, it is full of loads of nutrients such as bone marrow which is really important for blood health and immunity. Glycine and proline, which are amino acids that help produce heme and glucose, and aid in digestion. Cartilage, which is important for joint health - this is especially effective if you have arthritis. Finally, magnesium which also happens to be great for treating insomnia, and as we all know getting our beauty sleep is one of the most important things for great skin and mental health.

3. Tumeric

Turmeric is a fantastic spice which is not only great for your skin, it also holds memory boosting curcumin which helps brain function and helps to fight diseases - so if you are anything like me and can forget where you left your keys (even when they have been in my hand the whole time! *rolls eyes) Tumeric has incredible anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation in the body is really rough on skin, leading to wrinkles and aging in the long term and making skin look puffy and tired in the short term. Eating or drinking dried or fresh turmeric helps fight inflammation, keeping skin looking fresher and younger, while also helping relieve more serious inflammatory skin problems such as eczema and rosacea.

4. Spinach

This leafy green is loaded with nutrients and vitamins such as Vitamin A, necessary for growth in skin and hair, Vitamin C, imperative for the building and maintenance of collagen, and Iron which helps fight fatigue and improves muscle function. Spinach is also known to have cancer fighting properties which makes it a no-brainer for any meal, juice or smoothie!

5. Almonds.

While you probably already know that almonds are a healthy snack, they are also a beauty food, as they’re an extremely rich source of Vitamin E. This Vitamin is an antioxidant which helps the smoothness and suppleness in skin. Vitamin E helps fight signs of aging by protecting skin against the damage caused by ultraviolet rays, while nourishing the skin from drying out.

6. Salmon

Salmon is packed full of omega 3’s, another good fat that does wonders for your skin. These polyunsaturated fatty acids protect the skin from sun exposure, help repair damaged skin, and keep cell membranes healthy and hydrated, keeping toxins out and your skin looking supple and soft. This super tasty fish is proven to help maintain 20/20 vision, boost your metabolism, and improve brain power. The B-Vitamins in this is pretty much the key to vitality and great skin.

7. Lemons

When life gives you lemons, eat them! Beginning your day with some hot water and lemon is pretty much the mantra of every skincare expert, celebrity and health guru out there. Packed with Vitamin C, Lemons help neutralise free radicals and helps us make collagen and elastin which bind skin cells together, giving us firm, younger-looking skin. The Alkalising properties in this helps to detoxify the body by helping your digestive system and liver eliminate waste quickly which is perfect for glowing skin.

8. Medjool Dates

If you are like me and follow Deliciously Ella you'll already have a good idea as to what you can do with these little middle eastern delights. Dates are high in fiber and a perfect sweet treat to aid in cleansing. Rich in copper - an important mineral that helps the body absorb iron and form collagen and red blood cells, they are little gems when it comes to brightening your skin.

9. Sweet Potato

Adding these beta-carotene-rich starches into your daily diet can actually combat lackluster complexions. This is due to the magical skin-brightening combination of Vitamin A and Vitamin C that work to neutralize cell tissue-damaging free radicals that cause the dreaded dulling effect. Sweet potatoes are also rich in biotin, which stimulates hair and nail growth.

10. Blueberries

Antioxidants are one of the most important factors in maintaining beautiful skin, and eating blueberries is one of the easiest ways to get them. As we all know from some of the foods above, antioxidants help fight and neutralize free radicals which are known to damage skin cells and collagen, causing wrinkles, dry skin, and a host of other aging skin factors. Blueberries are also full of vitamin A, which helps normalise oil levels in your skin, and is very helpful in naturally clearing up acne-prone skin. Sign me up!

We all know how important Cleansers, Serums and Masks are to maintaining that healthy skin glow but what you put in your body is just as important. Thanks to modern skincare, you can pair your skin routine with your diet for optimal results.
